When Did This Word Gain Popularity?

During the late 20th and the early 21st century, the word began being used outside its academic realm. Its usage altered from a term of respect for inclusivity to a slur for students with disabilities.
And so, the controversy surrounding sped as a derogatory term heated up.
Sped: Offensive Slur Or Something Harmless?
Despite its widely recognized abbreviation for ‘special education,’ using the term sped can be damaging to the dignity of individuals with disabilities.

As an adult, teacher, or anyone else involved in the educational system, it’s essential to focus on the essence of the individual rather than labeling them with offensive terms like ‘sped’. People with disabilities deserve respect and should not be reduced to a negative slang term.
The intent behind using such a term may not always be derogatory, but the damage it can cause to their self-esteem and human dignity should be considered carefully.
It’s required to promote and provide a culture of respect and address the negative connotations. The same goes for any other slang words too associated with using the term sped in any context alike.
Choose Kind Words Over Harmful Comments
Intelligence is something that you’re born with so it is unfair to mock those with special needs by name calling. This leads to isolation and makes things worse, it hurts the person and makes them feel that they’re invisible, and awkward situations can be emerged.
Instead, choose positive words and be nice to everyone regardless of their condition. This will not only just help them, but will set a good example and a benchmark.
